Just like the American market the first 30 games had a simple design with a black border and pixelated scene of the game to show consumers exactly the type of graphics they would be experiencing. This design would carry over till late 1987, distributed by toy manufacturer ‘Mattel’.

The black box games would eventually get re-releases but this time distributed by another toy manufacturer ‘Bandai’ from 1990.

Three games got released using a similar design but instead had a grey border around the pixelated artwork. These would still count under the black box games and would be the last three of the 30 games that got released under this sub-set.

After the first 30 games got released, Nintendo would start allowing more 3rd party developers and publishers to release games for the console. There would be no strict guidelines at all for the design of the boxes that came with those games.

Konami were one of the first to develop and publish their own games in the European region. The artwork for their earlier games would have a silver border surrounding a hand-drawn image with both left and right sides of the border blending into it.
